Group guide, the $30 option

The Machu Picchu group guided tour costs $30.00 per person for a 3-hour walk in a group of up to 10. The entrance ticket is not included, so you book that first on our tickets page. You can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund and pay nothing until your spot is confirmed.

For a solo traveler or a couple, this is by far the cheapest way to get a Machu Picchu guided tour from Aguas Calientes.

Private guide, guide-only cards

Two cards sell the guide alone. The private tour guide service from TreXperience costs $99.00 per group for 2 hours, priced per group rather than per person, so it gets cheap fast if you travel with friends. The private professional guide costs $110.00 for 2h 30m to 4 hours and meets you in the main square, at your hotel or at the train station.

Catch: the listed $110.00 on that card is guide-only, the entrance ticket and transport add about $68 more per person at booking. If you have no ticket yet, a bundle is cheaper overall.

Bundles with ticket and bus included

Three cards wrap the entrance ticket into the price. The official entry plus guided tour at $136.00 runs 3 hours in a group of up to 9, with an optional bus added at booking. The guided tour with tickets at $155.00 adds the bus up and down and passes the sundial, the condor temple and the sacred rock.

The private tour with tickets included at $169.00 is fully private and runs 4 to 5 hours, built for travelers who arrange their own train but want everything else sorted. If you want the biggest ticket to the story rather than the smallest bill, that last card is the longest day of the three.

Recommended, not mandatory

The Ministry of Culture regulation that governs entry says a guide is recommended but does not state it as mandatory. You can walk the circuit on your own with a valid ticket and your passport. That said, guides are the only people allowed to explain the site as you move, and at the gate there are guides available to hire for the standard visit if you decide on the day.

What you lose without one, and what you still have to book

Without a guide you lose the names and stories behind the stones. The Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Rock and the Twelve Niches enclosure sit on different circuits, and which ones you see depends entirely on the route printed on your ticket. A guide turns a 2h 30m walk through pretty terraces into a structured tour with context.

Two things no guide changes: your ticket is one circuit, one timed slot, with a maximum of 2h 30m inside and no re-entry, and the circuit choice still has to be booked on the ticket itself before you travel.
