Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour: Two Different Trips Compared

The Sacred Valley Branch

One branch is the Sacred Valley plus train product. The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu 2-day tour by train runs with FLY CUSCO PERU and puts the entire day-one load on flat sightseeing: the Salt Mines, Maras, Moray, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and a local house visit in Chinchero, then Machu Picchu on day two. There is no trail, no permit for the Inca Trail network and no need for hiking fitness. Day two follows the classic pattern of any Cusco departure: the train to Machu Picchu Station in the town, then a bus up to the entrance, because the town and the ruins are not road-accessible.

SERNANP's access table lists the Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo leg at 60 km, about 2h10m, which is our sum for a day-two morning spent mostly in vehicles before reaching the gate.

The Short Inca Trail Branch

The other branch is the Short Inca Trail. The 2-day Inca Trail with Vistadome train and the 2-day Inca Trail overnight guided tour both use the km 104 entry, SERNANP's Route 5, also called the One Day route or Camino Real de los Inkas. Wikipedia describes this route as 6 to 7 hours of hiking on its walking day, joining the Classic route above Wiñay Wayna before the final climb to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, about 3 km past Wiñay Wayna. Cresting that ridge gives the first view of the ruins below.

Both hiking tours overnight in a hotel, not a campsite, before touring the citadel the next day. Inca Trail access is only through SERNANP-authorised agencies, so independent trekking is not permitted, and SERNANP's fee table prices Route 5 at US$65.30 (S/222) for adults, on top of the Ministry of Culture's citadel entry ticket. The 2-day Inca Trail with Vistadome train states that entrance tickets for both the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu are included; for the Sacred Valley product, entry inclusion is not stated, so check before you pay.

Choose the Sacred Valley If

Choose the Sacred Valley product if three things are true. First, fitness: you do not want a 6-7 hour hike day, and the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu 2-day tour lists no stated difficulty requirement. Second, the sites: you want to see the Salt Mines, Maras, Moray, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and the Chinchero house visit, which no hiking itinerary includes, in a small group capped at 10 with hotel-door pickup in Cusco.

Third, arrival: you are content entering Machu Picchu by bus from the town like almost everyone else, and the Sun Gate arrival does not matter to you. This trip also suits families with young children, since the only physical demand is walking around ruins on paved and stepped surfaces.

Choose the Short Inca Trail If

Choose a Short Inca Trail if the opposite is true. The Sun Gate arrival is the whole point of the km 104 route. The 2-day Inca Trail with Vistadome train times the hike to reach the Sun Gate for sunset on day one, and asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness, with children aged 3-17 accepted. The trail climbs real Inca steps, and the final approach runs about 3 km past Wiñay Wayna to the Sun Gate stairs.

If you want to see the valley sites as well as hike, you cannot have both in two days, so decide which matters more. Under the circuit system in force since 1 June 2024, both trip types end at the same gate with the same maximum 2h30m inside for standard entries.

Sleeping Near the Site

A day trip from Cusco is possible, and for many people it is the right call. The train from Ollantaytambo takes about 2h10m each way per SERNANP's access table, so a same-day visit is a long transport day wrapped around a citadel visit capped at 2h30m. The second day buys you sleep near the site, so your citadel entry can sit at the start of the next morning rather than being squeezed between two train legs.

You can also add the town itself: Aguas Calientes, official name Machupicchu Pueblo, sits at 2,040 m on the Vilcanota River with a population of 4,525 per the 2017 census, and there is plenty to fill an evening, from the hot springs to the site museum, free between 12:00 and 16:00. The Trade-Off

The 2-day hiking products buy something a day trip cannot sell at any price: the Sun Gate. No day trip includes a km 104 hike, because the timing does not work. On the 2-day Inca Trail with Vistadome train you reach the Sun Gate at sunset on day one and tour the citadel fresh the next morning.

On the Sacred Valley tour the second day buys the Sacred Valley sites instead, which a single-day Machu Picchu trip also cannot include. The trade is money and pace: all three products here cost more than a basic day trip, and the hiking ones are non-refundable or final-sale once booked, so a wrong booking hurts.
