Stay in Aguas Calientes or Day Trip From Cusco?

The transit math

SERNANP puts the Cusco to Machu Picchu Pueblo commercial train at 111 km and about 4 h 10 min each way. That is 8 h 20 min round trip on the rails, our own sum from the two legs. Against that you get one entry to the Llaqta, capped at 2 hours 30 minutes from your entry time on standard routes, with no re-entry except force majeure.

Entry slots run hourly from 06:00 to 15:00 and the site closes at 17:30. Add the bus ride up from the town, the walk to your gate, and the same in reverse, and a same-day visit gives you one circuit and little else. Packaged tours compress the logistics into one booking: the From Cusco full-day group tour runs 12 hours for US$332.00, the VIPAC day trip runs 14 hours for US$336.00 and includes the entry ticket, and the Happy Gringo guided day runs 12 to 16 hours for US$429.00 with round-trip train, bus, guide and hotel pickup.

What a day trip rules out

The mountain routes are the real casualty. Huayna Picchu (Route 3-A) sells two entry turns, 07:00-07:30 or 10:00-10:30, and Machu Picchu Mountain (Route 1-A) sells 07:00-07:30 or 09:00-09:30. Both require you back from the summit by 13:00, and there is no tolerance at those mountain control points.

To hit any of those windows you must already be near the gate first thing in the morning. A same-day 4 h 10 min train from Cusco, plus the bus up the switchbacks, cannot land you at a 07:00 mountain entry. It also cannot stretch to a second circuit, because a single ticket buys a single timed entry and the site closes at 17:30.

If a mountain climb or a second lap is on your list, a day trip from Cusco removes it before you start.

The mountain-ticket argument

Only a night in town makes the 07:00 mountain entries realistic. From a bed in Aguas Calientes you can take the first buses up the switchback road or the steep walk toward Puente Ruinas and stand at the gate when the early slots open. That puts Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain back on the menu, plus the 10:00 turns for late risers who still want the climb.

The extra room it buys

A night in town also buys slack. You can do one circuit in the morning, come down for lunch, and visit the Museo de Sitio Manuel Chavez Ballon during its free window from 12:00 to 16:00. You can soak in the hot springs at the top of Avenida Pachacutec without watching a departure board.

Ambitious visitors even split two entries across a morning and an afternoon, since each ticket carries its own timed 2 h 30 min slot. What we can and cannot price

The one saving a day trip guarantees is time: about 8 h 20 min of train transit avoided on the day you visit, since you sleep through none of it. What we cannot do is quote the extra cost of staying, because no official body publishes a town-wide nightly rate list for Aguas Calientes hotels, hostels or lodges. Any figure you see elsewhere for an average night in town is an aggregation, not an official number.
